Hanging Basket How To

Now the Frosts have gone (finally!) It's time to put up your hanging baskets! Here's a (quick?) how to...

Grab a bag of multi-purpose compost (preferably with added nutrients, suitable for containers and baskets). Mix in water-storing crystals (I use Vitax 'Stay Wet') & a slow release plant food (Miracle Gro) as instructed.

Choose your basket & preferred liner (I like to use coco liners). Then cut slits as a cross (+) an inch from the top using scissors or a sharp knife. I make a incision every other segment (this is about 9 holes in a 18" basket, 8 holes in a 16" basket).

Fill your basket up to half way with the compost & then we start inserting the plants! Trying to get the plants in through the liner can be traumatic for the little guys, so I like to wrap them up safely for the journey! Anything really will do - some paper, an old magazine, a bit of plastic off the compost bag...

So roll them up in their transportation material and direct them into place! Ease them through by a little tug on the paper, and then you can unwrap them when they reach their destination.

Don't they look happy

Now fill to the brim with compost, pressing down a little to compact (this will help the roots to establish better, and also when you water there will still be plenty of compost).

Adding more plants to finalise your design! Think about height in the arrangement - maybe include a standard fushia or geraniums. Water well, including a spoonful of dissolvable Miracle-Gro once a week. Hang in a sunny position and watch them bloom!
